A Dudley Lab has the same characteristics as a typical dark nose Labrador. Black nose or brown nose or Dudley nose, every Labrador can be a loving and great family pet. The difference is the physical properties associated with the color of its nose, eye rims and feet. Dudley Labs does not have pigmentation in some areas where yellow labs are black. If you're planning on getting a Yellow Lab to show it in conformation (dog shows), then you should not get a puppy that has a pink nose - it's a disqualification at shows. A Dudley Lab has the same characteristics as that of a normal dark nose Labrador. Either black nose or brown nose or a Dudley nose, every Labrador can be a loving and wonderful family pet. The only difference is the physical characteristics related to the colour of its nose, eye rims and feet. A lot of yellows will start with a black nose as a pup but it will change to a more brown color when the dog grows. (both of my yellow labs had noses as black as coal when I first got them and their noses changed to brown.) The yellow e-locus gene masks the brown coat hair color but the nose, lip and eye rim leather still show the brown gene. Yellow labs with brown noses are faulted in the breed, but do not have any health issues associated with the color. If a yellow Lab has two genes that encode for chocolate then the dog will have liver (chocolate) pigment also known as a "Dudley" and this can vary from very light flesh colored on a light yellow to a dark brown on a red or dark yellow. These different combinations can arise from various breedings depending on what color the parents are AND.

The eyes sit well apart, imparting the kindness and good temperament of the breed and are rimmed in black in yellow and black-coated labs.
